Is your pension worth what you thought?

The combination of regular contributions and investment growth means your pension could be worth a lot of money. So it’s worth checking regularly to assess its current value.

Regular statements

Your pension administrator should give you pension statements at least once a year. These tell you:

  • What your pension fund holdings are currently worth
  • What your pension fund might be worth at retirement
  • What pension income this could buy you at retirement

Remember that your pension forecasts have to make certain assumptions (shown on your statement) and should be used only as a guide.

Less than you expected?

Even though they are only forecasts, what if your statement shows that your pension is worth less than you thought?

Here are some measures you can take:

  • Check your investment performance. Has your pension value fallen because investment performance has dropped? Decide if this is a short-term event or if you need to change investments.
  • Check your investment strategy. Is your investment strategy giving you the best growth potential for the level of risk you are willing to take?
  • Increase your contributions. See if you are maximising what your employer will put in.
  • Increase your retirement age. It’s drastic, but see if you can extend the time you have to keep your pension fund invested.

Addressing a pension shortfall can be a challenge, so get a professional pension adviser to help.
